CHEAP Samsung LN-R238WA 23-Inch Widescreen HDTV-Ready Flat-Panel LCD TV

I have been using my Samsung LCD TV for several months now. I am very pleased with the picture, even though I have not yet changed my cable service to HD. I continue to be amazed at how good regular TV images can be. I was watching a show when a commercial came on that depicted either clouds or an explosion at high-speed. I caught it out of the corner of my eye and my reaction was “WOW!” What must HD be like on this set? Eventually, I will find out.
The TV has a nice array of settings to play around with for your viewing pleasure — but my “but…” from above is the lack of having a way of changing the aspect ratio directly from the remote. As it is, that setting is buried in the menu tree. A real pity, as regular cable has a variety of aspect ratios in use, and I am frequently changing that setting.
All in all, I am still happy with my Samsung. I would definately recommend this manufacturer.
Isn’t it time your home office, dorm, kitchen, or bedroom went high-def? Samsung’s 23-inch LN-R238W LCD television lets you enjoy not only regular TV, but full HD images from any high- or enhanced-definition source. Its suite of state-of-the-art connections accommodate a wealth of associated equipment, such as a DTV set-top box, a progressive-scan DVD player, and even your PC. Samsung’s Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) screen provides high brightness and amazingly rich contrast for lifelike images and realistic colors. A mere 3.5 inches thick without its detachable stand, the TV produces exciting, perfectly flat, images while occupying minimal space in your office, living room, bedroom, or kitchen.

| Detail Enhancer DNIe analyzes video signal elements to produce sharper detail, clearer image separation, and more natural edge transition. |
The set boasts a 1,366 x 768 pixel resolution. Its widescreen, 16:9 aspect ratio matches the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts, while its wide, 170-degree viewing angles (horizontal x vertical) ensures everyone in the room will enjoy a great view, even when you’ve mounted the unit on a wall. A built-in brightness sensor automatically adjusts the TV’s luminance for the ambient brightness of a given room.
Onboard 10-bit processing produces 3.2 billion lifelike colors and aids in video signal processing for your analog sources. And with its lightning-quick 12 ms response time, astronomical 3,000:1 contrast ratio, impressive 500 cd/m2 brightness rating, and onboard 3D Y/C digital comb filter (which separates the color signals to minimize dot crawl and blurred edges), you’ll see sharp, focused images regardless of their source.
LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, freedom from eye strain (no screen flickering or radiation emissions), quiet operation (no high-pitch “flyback” noise, an issue with CRT TVs), accurate image geometry (no curvature distortion or susceptibility to magnetic interference from, say, speakers), long screen life, space savings, and light weight/easy positioning. They also tend to be more affordable than their flat-panel plasma counterparts, which often (though not always) offer faster response times and higher contrast ratios.
The LN-R238W’s DNIe (Samsung Digital Natural Image engine) offers a vision of digital perfection in natural, crystal-clear images that reveal even the most minute detail. The process involves 4 key enhancements: contrast and brightness (for deep, rich blacks and natural whites), motion (which optimizes fast-moving images to produce natural-looking motion, reducing video noise or blurring), color (for lifelike realism, accurate whites, and skin tones with natural hues), and detail (DNIe analyzes video signals to ensure sharp detail, clear image separation, and natural edge transitions).
Samsung’s patented My Color Control technology lets you control specific colors without affecting the whole screen. Samsung provides 6-color control selections: white, red, pink, yellow, green, and blue. It’s your picture–you decide how it looks. Samsung’s PVA screen permits brighter whites than standard TFT LCDs, as well as deeper blacks and every shade in between.
The LN-R238W makes flexibility a top priority, giving you several preset picture and sound modes (and custom settings for each). The TV also permits color temperature adjustment for warm, cool, or neutral tones, along with 4 onscreen languages to choose from (English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese). Choose one of several preset sound modes (standard, music, movie, speech, and custom) for broadcast through the set’s built-in speakers (10-watts-per-channel x 2).
Connections include 2 component-video inputs (480i/480p/720p/1080i), a direct-digital HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface), a PC input (15-pin D-Sub with minijack analog audio), 2 composite-video inputs, 1 S-video input, 1 RF input, 5 attendant sets of stereo (left/right) RCA audio inputs, and 1 stereo RCA audio output. The set’s Anynet (RS-232C) control option simplifies use with other Samsung audio/video components.
Other features include single-tuner picture-in-picture (view 1 TV channel and 1 input source simultaneously), a sleep timer, V-Chip parental control, closed captioning, and an auto volume leveler to minimize jarring differences in loudness between, say, TV programs and their commercials.
What’s in the Box
TV, detachable stand (with screws), a remote control, remote batteries, an RF video cable, a user’s manual, an Anynet AV manual, an AC power cord, a cover bottom, an Anynet cable, a cleaning cloth, and warranty information.

The TV was delivered by CEVA pretty quickly and without much incident. But when I opened the box, I found that it was missing the stand. I called Samsung customer support, the guy said he’s never heard of this problem and said he’d send me one free of charge that should arrive in 7-10 days. Without a wall mount, this TV needs the Samsung stand to be (safely) set up, so I was a little anxious for it to arrive. But after 10 business days, I didn’t receive anything. I called back again, and they said there was no way for them to track the ticket at ALL, they couldn’t even tell me if the part was shipped. I was pushy to get some kind of info, and was basically told that I should be grateful for getting a part for free – except it was a part that should have been in the box! All in all, it took 3 weeks for the part to arrive. And it didn’t even include the screws – I had to go to a hardware store to get something that fit. br /That horrible experience aside, this TV is phenomenal. Don’t think that you need 1080p or 120Hz, especially on a 32″ set. 1080p content is scaled by the TV to look great in 720p. I put this TV next to another manufacturer’s 1080p 32″, and Samsung was hands-down better in every aspect. The screen has excellent viewing angles, and has a more matte finish, giving it less glare than most other sets. Calibration options are extensive, but if you don’t want to mess with it, it looks good without any fooling. The integrated TV tuner picks up all my channels. The remote is easy to use, although it’s not programmable in any way. Sound quality is good, for an integrated set of speakers. And after 6 months, I haven’t had any hardware or technical issues, which is good because I wouldn’t want to call customer support again. br /I think my experience with the missing stand is unique. But if you have to deal with Samsung customer support, be prepared for a little frustration. Despite that, I’m not disappointed at all about this TV though, because the quality is way more than I’d expect out of a 32″. I even went with Samsung for my 46″ TV, I found they are consistently good. Less expensive HDTVs may seem more appealing because of the price, but a picture to picture comparison will reveal why the cheaper ones are priced the way they are. If picture quality matters to you, then get this set.

This is my second Samsung. The first one was a 27 incher, my first HDTV. I bought it for my bedroom and I was a little ignorant about sizes. Since the prior tube TV had been a 19 inch I thought 27 would be large enough. I really liked the 27 incher but wanted a larger screen. So I bought the 32 inch in the same brand, since I was very happy with the features, images and general workings of the first. Soon after I got a Samsung Blu Ray player. This combination is terrific for watching DVD’s, even those not Blu Ray. My only quibble is that it does not digitally enlarge the screen for some shows that get broadcast in little hi res boxes.

I’d been hearing about the upcoming Samsung 9000 series, with the wireless “media box” and the full localized LED backlighting (this one uses edge-based LED lighting). I kept waiting on it to come out, but it was delayed repeatedly, and I finally decided to go with this one (assuming that when the 9000 came out, I’d move this one to my bedroom).
Well, let’s just say I feel no desire to “upgrade” my living room TV now. This set is BEAUTIFUL… even though it’s not “localized LED backlit” I’ve still got so much black-to-white contrast, compared to any set I’ve ever seen before, that I can’t imagine, right now, that I’d be able to see the difference on a better set. If I can’t tell the difference between a device and the “better” version… as far as I’m concerned, there IS no difference.
This set is part of a complete “home theater” setup, including a full 7.1 speaker system (two original-release Bose 301 speakers, a set of Klipsch Quintet IIIs, and a Polk PSW505 12″ subwoofer), a Pioneer 1019 receiver, a home theater PC, plus a full range of sources (turntable, cassette, VCR, DVD-changer, Archos 5 internet media tablet, cable-company DVR, and blu-ray player).
If I had a much larger living room, I might want a LARGER set, but as far as the picture quality, I’m just amazed. Note that everything I watch on this set (in High-definition, at least) comes in through the receiver, and I’m sure that contributes some elements to the overall picture characteristics… but I’ve never seen a better picture anywhere.
The sound quality from the built-in speakers is better than “fine” but obviously not truly hi-fidelity. The feature set is very complete (though I think I need to upgrade my “wireless G” uplink point to a “wireless N” uplink point so that I can watch movies from online… you need a FAST connection for this to work, though all the rest of the internet-ish features work flawlessly on my “wireless G” connection).
Note that if you want the “internet” features, you’ll either need to connect a network cable to it, or do as I have and go wireless. If you go wireless, you have only one choice… Samsung’s PROPRIETARY “usb dongle.” That’s the one criticism of this set I can really make.
As far as the set’s cosmetics… I would have preferred it to be provided without the “touch of color” bezel, and instead just be the functional monitor (which would actually be a bit smaller overall). But I’m a guy, I couldn’t care less about the appearance (provide it doesn’t have “Hello Kitty” on it or something!). I care about how it works… and it works magnificently. I got it here because it was VERY affordable here… that’s what keeps me coming back to Amazon (instead of shopping at my local Best Buy or whatever). Mind you, I’d gladly patronize my local shop, if they had the stock, and the prices, you get here.
But let’s just say… I’ve decided to buy the smaller version (32″, 6000 series) to go into my bedroom now, and I bought that from Amazon as well. It’s hard to beat the service you get here!

I purchased this TV second-hand, and I use it as a computer monitor. I do a significant amount of graphic design work, so color reproduction, black levels and clarity are very important to me.br /br /Expect to spend some time playing with the settings if you want anything approximating true colors. At first I thought this was an awful TV/monitor. I spent a couple hours trying to calibrate it and, after being unable to achieve usable results, I almost sold it the next day. It took me a couple more hours of a tinkering to finally get it how it is now, but NOW it is fantastic.br /br /It took a combination of video card settings and monitor settings. While calibrating I ensured I had a high contrast background with lots of dark colors. I played a video with lots of action and facial tones, and kept a color palette up. Then I played with the settings individually, I first got the monitor optimized: sharpness (0), contract (65), brightness(60), color(50), tint (G50/R50), color temperature (Cool2), in Dynamic mode using the “Just Scan” option and none of the stupid gimmicky software filtering they add under picture options. Then moving onto the video card settings I found that I needed to drastically alter the gamma settings to alleviate serious black-bleeding (+1.27). I also had to fool around with individual colors using the automatic monitor setup tool that comes with Nvidia video cards. Obviously, your TV and video card are going to differ from mine, but hopefully this serves as a helpful starting point.br /br /The color reproduction and black levels are almost on par with my IPS and PVA panels that sit to the left and right respectively. Even though this is a TN, it does have very acceptable color reproduction. Now don’t get me wrong, you will not want to do any sort of graphic work on this TV, but it looks great for movies, games and general computer use.br /br /It is sufficiently bright with the backlight on level 0 both at night and during the day.br /br /The remote is alright. It’s quite ugly, but it’s designed with older folks in mind. The buttons are easy to hit and the backlight behind the keys makes it easily usable in a dark room.br /br /The stand is sturdy and looks very nice and clean. The base’s rotation works well and stays where placed, it will not rotate on its own.br /br /If you do much switching between resolutions, such as transitioning into a legacy full screen program, the monitor does take a few seconds to catch up. It is much worse than any monitor I’ve used before, but not a deal-breaker for me at all.br /br /I can truly recommend this product, but be prepared to calibrate!
Samsung’s 550 Series is a perfect way to step up to Full HD 1080p resolution. A fast 5 ms response rate produces smooth-motion scenes for sports and action movies, and a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1 makes for deep blacks and crisp lines (15,000:1 in 32-inch and 37-inch models). Superb connectivity and networking with a USB port and 3 HDMI 1.3 ports with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) means these HDTVs play well with all of your other electronics. Easily enjoy MPEG and JPEG files stored on external devices by connecting through the side-mounted USB 2.0, turn your LCD into a full-scale home viewing gallery, or connect your MP3 player for a dynamic audio experience. h2span style=”font-weight: bold;”img align=”right” alt=”lifestyle” hspace=”10″ src=”http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/cat-500/Samsung/detail-pages/samsung-lcd-2008-lifestyle.jpg” style=”width: 430px; height: 344px;” vspace=”10″ /Key Featuresbr //span/h2h3/h3ullispan style=”font-weight: bold;”span style=”color: #ff0000;”New /span– 30,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio/span: up from 15,000:1 on 2007 models (15,000 on 32-inch and 37-inch models) (Learn morespan/span)br //lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”span style=”color: #ff0000;”New/span — Fast 5ms response time:/span down from 8ms on 2007 models thanks to a new high-speed liquid crystal/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Full 1080p HD/span (Learn more)/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”178-degree viewing angle/span from all four axes with Super Patterned Vertical Alignment (Learn more)br //lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”3 HDMI 1.3 ports/span: Simplay compliant (Learn more)/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”USB 2.0 port: /spanconnect devices directly to your HDTV–view JPEG photos or MPEG movies or easily listen to your MP3 player through your HDTV’s audio system or your home theater system/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”DNIe Digital Natural Image Engine/span improves the picture by enhancing the contrast, detail, and white balance (Learn more)br /span style=”font-weight: bold;”/span/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Hidden speakers with SRS TruSurround XT audio/span (Learn more)/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Wide Color Enhancer/span technology and Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) offer a wider color range (Learn more)/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Picture-in-Picture (PIP)/span enables convenient simultaneous viewing of TV programs and video or PC sources/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”V-Chip/span system allows blocking of rated TV and movie programs determined by the parent to contain objectionable content./lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Trilingual /spanon-screen displays in English, Spanish or French. br //lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Variable sleep timer/span to turn the TV off in varying time intervals./lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Auto wall mount compatible:/span 3-dimensional operation via TV’s remote control; no external IR receiver required./lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Swivel stand/span included/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”1 year parts and 1 year labor warranty /span(90 days parts and labor for commercial use), with in-home service, backed by Samsung toll-free support/li/ulh2/h2h3span style=”font-weight: bold;”Step Up Featuresbr //span/h3span style=”font-weight: bold;”/spanullispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Series 6: /span50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, AutoMotion Plus 120Hz image interpolation for smoother motion, 4ms response time, Transparent and Opaque Color (TOC) bezel, Clear Panel, Ethernet port with Infolink free RSS feeds, 4 HDMI 1.3 ports, Sports and Game modes, Compatible with Samsung’s Home Digital Media Adapter for playback and navigation of Internet and stored PC multimedia/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Series 7: /spanInternal flash memory (1GB) with pre-loaded interactive content such as cooking recipes, children’s entertainment, HD artwork and more, Integrated woofer for an enhanced audio experience, DLNA-Compatible: for better interoperability with electronics, computers and mobile devices from many different manufacturers/lilih3span style=”font-weight: bold;”Step Up Featuresbr //span/h3span style=”font-weight: bold;”/span/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Series 6: /span50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, AutoMotion Plus 120Hz image interpolation for smoother motion, 4ms response time, Transparent and Opaque Color (TOC) bezel, Clear Panel, Ethernet port with Infolink free RSS feeds, 4 HDMI 1.3 ports, Sports and Game modes, Compatible with Samsung’s Home Digital Media Adapter for playback and navigation of Internet and stored PC multimedia/lilispan style=”font-weight: bold;”Series 7: /spanInternal flash memory (1GB) with pre-loaded interactive content such as cooking recipes, children’s entertainment, HD artwork and more, Integrated woofer for an enhanced audio experience, DLNA-Compatible: for better interoperability with electronics, computers and mobile devices from many different manufacturers/lilistrongSeries 8:/strong super-slim 1.9-inch thick profile/li/ulul/ul What size TV should you get? CHEAP Samsung LN37B550 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color

Like many others we settled for this 37″ TV because of the fixed size of a expensive TV cabinet. I am replacing a SONY anlog TV, i am very happy with my Sony, which i had for 15 years. Unfortunately, Sony does not make 37″ LCD’s anymore
Sadly, i had to look out for other brands. We compared Panasonic LC37-G1, LG 37LH30 and with Samsung LN37B530. We eliminated Panasonic as it did not have analog audio output, LG did not have good reviews and Samsung LN-37B530 has only 1 component input (needed 2, 1 for wii and one for DVD player). This Samsung LN37B550 has what i need except 120Hz which costs additonal 0. When i compared this Samsung37B550(60Hz) and Samsung37B630(120Hz)at Best Buy i could not really tell much difference in picture quality that would merit spending another 0.
PRO’s: Amazon service was Excellent. We were promised delivery in 5 or 6 days, we got it delivered the next day of my ordering as we live closer to Amazon’s ware house. Setting up this TV is easy, could be done in 30 minutes or less. Picture quality is very good for HD channels, but not very good for traditional channels.
CON’s: TOC (Touch Of Color) is a marketing ploy, please do not fall for it. I could not make out the red color during day or night. I had to look for it consciously. Also, the volume, power and channel buttons in the front bezel of the TV are practically unusable because they are touch sensitive ones on the bezel. The markings on it are not very clearly visible, much less distinguish between them, you just have to guess where they are. I had to always use the remote. So, do not loose your remote. Sound is too tiny out of the speakers, as i do not want to listen through my AV system all the time. Compared to my SONY this SAMSUNG sounds awfully too tiny. Think twice before buying if you do not have or do not plan to use a AV system with this TV.
