This is my first HDTV and glad with the purchase, also glad I waited all this time to get one (cheaper prices, more options). I got it in mid-March and no problems with it yet (knock on wood). Some reviews & people complain the blacks are not black enough, but I’m not an HD snob, so the picture looks great to me and the colors are bright and clear. Coming from a 36″ standard TV I am very pleased with this, making the little 13″ standard in my bedroom look old and needing to be replaced by a 22″ HDTV. Watching sports (basketball only for now) looks good, no blurring or negative imagery – great detail and refresh rate works nicely. This has a lot of a lot of good options in the back: connected it to my stereo and at the same time plug in my computer to play movies from there. Really like that I can connect multiple audio/video/PC devices at the same time and easily switch from one to another.
My ONLY COMPLAINT so far – the internal speakers are pretty cheap and would sound ‘tinny’ or as if they were going to bust when the volume was turned up higher. To fix that I connected my stereo receiver and speakers and muted the TV audio – now it sounds great with stereo sound.
Delivery was also good; the two gentleman were friendly, connected it to make sure it worked properly then left – didn’t take a long time.

Gave this TV four stars but a high four stars after only having the set for a few days. Have NOT hooked up a Bluray player and to my understanding so far, that’s the only source where you will CURRENTLY realize 1080p resolution. My cable box delivers 1080i and there may not be much of a difference but from what I’ve seen in the electronics stores, it does make a difference. Don’t get me wrong, the picture on this LG is really nice but because I haven’t tried Bluray, I don’t see the very, very high detail I do at the stores. The stores have some TV’s that are directly hooked to a Bluray player, thus the fantastic picture. So if you’re thinking about this TV, simply see the picture for yourself in a store with Bluray. br /br /Before buying this TV I compared its picture, right next to a Sony and some Samsung’s. Every bit as good and in the case of the Sony, better! However, I’m disappointed with some of the views I’ve seen while at home, the biggest being the “distance” views of people’s faces–what looks to be about 10 feet or so, away from the face. Less detail there than when very close up. Now, that could be my cable connection or the signal coming from my cable box, how the screen was shot, etc. Close up face pictures are fantastic. br /br /This size TV is really nice, a true “home theater” experience and recommended minimum viewing distance from the set is about 8 feet! Size does matter. Ha. Oh, I wanted to mention this. If you’re in the market for a wall mount I priced them at the stores. “Cir. Sity”= over 0 “Worst Buy”= 0 I ended up getting a mount on “Fleabay”, that great on line auction site for about 0! It’s called the “DUAL ARM LCD PLASMA MOUNT 37″ 42″ 50″ 58″ 63″ SANUS 1″ and it is one of the few wall mounts that will fit this TV. Be careful at the auctions. Some sellers will tell you their mount will fit but just look at their mount drawing that shows the dimensions. Must be 400 X 800 mm to work. br /br /PROS ON THIS LCD: Nice picture and even though I’ve read other reviews on the poorer “black coloring” I’ve not noticed a problem with that. Love the “User 1″ and “User 2″ and other picture quality setting options. Yes, the settings make a difference when viewing HD or regular TV. (Access these quickly by sliding the plastic cover on the remote and hitting “Picture”—-simple!) Love the size of the screen and the overall look of the set. Sound is average and a home theater system with a set like this is really the icing on the cake. Installation was pretty straight-forward. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to hook it up. Really like the USB hook up to show your home photos or to listen to your home music. Like the side mounted USB and S-video access and find the rear access not an inconvenience. I like being able to hook up my computer to the set too. This TV does a great job of showing good quality from stations that do not have HD too! Very nice picture. br /br /CONS ON THIS LCD: Don’t like the lessor quality picture in distance views but as mentioned, that could be my cable connection or what the movie was filmed in, better or worse definition, etc. (Varies with what you are watching) The information in the manual that comes with the TV is very poor and the on line manual and included C.D. is no better. It tells what the buttons on the remote are for and how to hook the TV up, etc. but nothing is really explained. Nothing. I guess the only way to get more info is to go directly to LG or through an on line forum. br /br /I guess the bottom line is—just because it’s an HD LCD TV don’t expect this or any other HD set to give you a fantastic picture all the time. Too many factors, such as; what “broadcasters” are filming in, your personal settings, your cable company’s set ups, etc. Do NOT watch the TV with the picture settings that come from the factory! You must go through all the settings and adjust them to your own eye. Only then will you get a good picture. br /br /But if you’re on the line of whether or not to buy, it truly is a home theater and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. That being said, the news said that LCD’s should drop in price, by half, by the day after Thanksgiving! You might want to hold off! Good luck.br / Jerrybr /br /Update: I’ve watched movies and have determined that the problem with the lessor quality of picture of people, etc., further from the camera or in the background is the result of programs and movies NOT in HD or shot in a lessor resolution. The picture in HD is nothing less than fantastic!

I purchased this TV two months ago at a popular warehouse retail store. I had spent one month researching and shopping around. At the start of my research, I was leaning toward a 42″ Plasma. Throughout my research process I determined that the LCD technology was equal to, and probably surpassing the plasmas. I decided to switch gears and only focus on LCD’s. I had also been told by MANY of my peers that, “whatever size you are thinking about, go one higher assuming you have the space.” I took their advice, and have not been disappointed.
My ultimate decision to purchase this Phillips model was in large part due to the cost; however I spent a considerable amount of time in the store fine tuning the picture on the floor model to make sure that I could achieve results that I was looking for. I found that within a short amount of time I could get the picture to look at least as good as all the other floor models, and better than the majority of them. The menus are not as easy to navigate through, as some other brands, but I see this as a non-factor. Once I set up the picture and programmed my favorite stations, it’s simple to use.
I’m an Architect so overall set design was also important to me. I have to say that the Phillips, by far, was the best TV to look at, regardless of it being turned on. The TV stand, is very geometric, and constructed out of simple materials, without plastics. In my opinion the set would fit very well in any “contemporary” room. I recently hung mine on the wall with a peerless, tilting, wall mount, and concealed the cables. I’m slightly sad that I had to moth-ball the stand, however now the room looks like it has another piece of art on the wall. I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. A great way to spend the Tax Return!!!

I have a refurblished 37″ directly purchased from phillps 2006 and so I was feeling confident about this purchase and I was not disappointed,moved the 37″ to the living room which now looks better than ever and placed this 47″ in the bed room and I was spprized at the quality of the build and clearity of the picture, i would diffinantly recommend this TV

Wow. where to start….br /br /So HD Digital cable is unbelievably sharp. Especially sports. Especially the Nuggets.br /br /There is something to be said about movies or tv shows recorded before HD, like Senfield or a movie like Transformenrs. There is this thing about it at first you can’t get away from and its tough to explain. Its the 120Hz True motion tecnology that basicly “up-converts” dvd quality picture to try to get closer to HD quality by rounding, filling in, artificially rendering more frames, hence 120hz, opposed to telivisions 60hz. The manufacturer sets this on high, so it is quite noticable at first. After changing the setting in Advanced Controls It actually has a nice impact, and as long as I can change between Low, high, off, I’m Happy.br /br /The wireless runs smooth as silk but you need direct, non-obstruction, between box and front base of tv. The box is good. Nice amount of imputs of all kinds. compoters, old vcrs, whatever. currently mine is at a distance of 4 ft. but will be moving to 20ft. br /br /I mounted it on the wall, with an ultra thin 1″ wall mount. I had a small problem because the cord coming out the back was like 1.4 inches and i had to balance the otherside with something. But it is secure and looks great.br /br /The tv is an Energystar tv, so it has like 5 different power levels you can run. It also has this light sensor that can sense the ambient light in the room and ajust the brightness of the screen. So when its bright in the room the tv automatically adjusts brighter, and same whae it is dark, it dims to fit the suropundings.br /br /The stand is nice.br /br /The apperance of the tv itself is really beautiful. As you know it has a translicent outer boarder. Its kinda mocha-y chocolate hue. The liquid drop is sweet. it is off when the tv is off. it is red and moving when you turn it on, and a light white when tv is on. You can turn it off.br /br /Price, I found this at 1289$ with shipping, 1/5/10 I would not pay more. I was enitially looking for a 700$ tv but didnt have the level of quality, and dont for get the wireless!br /br /So I got just the powercord sticking out from the tv making it more flexable in room design. br /br /Thats about all I think needs ranting about. br /enjoy.

To begin with, though I’m an ardent film collector, this LG television is my first foray into the HDTV market. It’s replacing a 27″ RCA CRT, a six year old television that still functions perfectly. However, after finally aquiring a PS3 Slim and attempting to get into gaming, I found my poor CRT was simply out of its league. Also, now that many Blu-Ray prices are dropping (particularly on older titles), I thought it’d be great to have a system capable of handling proper Blu-Ray transfers of favorite films like “The Road Warrior”, “Outland”, and “Barry Lyndon” (all of which never had a proper restoration on DVD, and two of which are sadly still unavailable on Blu).
For those who have no idea where to begin understanding what to look for in a HDTV, CNET is an invaluable research resource. Their in-depth reviews of various models are some of the most helpful out there (though they do not have one for this particular unit). Also of interest are their articles that explain in detail what difference certain features make and what HDMI cable you should buy (seriously, don’t spend more than ). After doing my due diligence, I decided this LG model struck the absolute best balance between low price, huge screen size, and abundance of higher-end specs.
Setup was a breeze, all that’s required is a screwdriver to screw in the included base. I was able to install the base and setup the TV myself, but considering this unit weighs around sixty pounds you may want someone else to assist (the delivery driver will usually help). Then it’s just a simple matter of plug-and-play. There’s also a cover for the bottom stand hole in case your unit will be wall-mounted. The menus are very user-friendly and easy to navigate, and there’s even instructions included directly on the TV. There is a small setup booklet included, but the bulk of the manual is on an Abobe Acrobat file in the included CD-ROM. No issues with the remote either, the buttons are nice sized and well mapped-out.
A fatal error many frugal yet selective television consumers make is buying a cheaper entry-level HDTV like this and expecting it to somehow perform like a 00 plasma unit. It’s just not going to happen. However, considering the gorgeous picture on this model and the relatively low price tag, it’s difficult to justify paying more for a “better” LCD or a potentially problematic plasma. For instance, I considered some of the new LED LCD models, many of which offer a refresh rate of 240. But I simply couldn’t make a discernable distinction when compared to this model (which has a rate of 120), and the image simply wasn’t impressive enough to warrant the massive price tag.
The Blu-Rays I’ve tested (which included “Quantum of Solace”, “Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan”, “The Phantom”, and “Glory”) all looked – in a word – incredible. The sheen of clarity on each print was jaw-dropping (though “Glory” has a good deal of grain still present). DVDs look great as well, just not as sharp as Blu-Rays. My wife and I spent an entire Saturday going through the extended edition DVDs of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy on this model, and I simply have no complaints to report. The screen is large enough to provide a cinematic effect (especially in a bedroom), the movement onscreen was fluid, and the colors leaped off the screen. Even a series like “Battlestar Galactica”, where the picture was intentionally degraded to give it a ‘grittier’ feel, looks gorgeous on plain-jane DVD.
The TruMotion feature isn’t the failed experiment so many reviewers claim it to be. Under the correct circumstances, such as a high definition NFL game, the effect works wonderfully. Films, however, aren’t quite built for this sort of thing. The TruMotion feature effectively removes the atmospheric sheen on the film print to the extent that it causes certain scenes to look amateurish, as if shot on home video. It’s difficult to explain without example, but if you visit a floor model at a local store, many retailers will let customers toggle with the settings.
Also, regarding the infamous “lip synch” issue, I’ve watched hours of cable in addition to multiple DVD and Blu-Rays and I haven’t had a single problem. My model was manufactured in February 2010, so it’s possible they’ve updated the firmware on the latest models. In fact, I really can’t find any serious faults with this model, it’s as if this unit was made specifically for my needs. Perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay to this model is to say that I don’t feel as if I bought an “entry level” television. For now, it’s five well-earned stars, I’ll update later if any issues arise.

Purchasing the LG47SL80 was primarily based on in-store evaluations, Consumer Reports recommendations and reading every review I could find. In over 30 years, I’ve never been disappointed using these guidelines.br /br /Viewing this TV is better than watching live action because real life doesn’t always offer perfect lighting. The LG47SL80 does. From a distance of 7 feet, my choice in a darkened room for a genuine movie experience, the pimples and imperfections on all those beautiful people, whom I thought were absolutely perfect, clearly show up through their makeup. I have yet to decide if this is a pro or con. It is AMAZING CLARITY.br /br /Choose a matt screen vs. glossy black wisely. If you have complete control of the lighting in your TV room, the glossy black screen is phenomenal.br /br /In a large family room with lots of windows and several viewing angles, you might consider the matt screen.br /br /Regardless of the room lighting conditions, when the set is turned off, most rooms exude more pop and pizazz with the reflections and accents afforded by a huge glossy black screen than they do with a dull chunk of matt glass.br /br /The remote is responsive and easy to use. It took about 15 minutes of playing around with the menu selections to gain a total understanding of the unit. br /br /The “White-Glove” delivery came through as promised. Before placing my order, I had questions about the company making the delivery. Were they bonded and insured? They were.br /br /Amazon.Com gave me the names of 3 possible companies and explained that once my shipment arrived into my area, it would be assigned to one of these companies. That company would in turn contact me to set up a delivery time. In my case, the initial delivery was scheduled for December 28th. It was delivered on the morning of December 24th and was set up in about 20 minutes. br /br /Merry Christmas.br /br /My signal comes from two roof-top antennas, as a result, the audio and video are in perfect sync and spectacular.br /br /Using the up/down channel selection switch takes 2 seconds for the channel to change and the picture to appear. Pressing the numerical buttons to select a channel takes 5 seconds for the picture to appear. This might be important to other impatient, channel-surfing males like myself.br /br /The set replaced a 250-pound Toshiba Cinema Series HD 36-inch tube TV, which heretofore, I thought was as good as it gets. Was I ever wrong. This monster sat in a cabinet that weighed as much as the TV and moving the ensemble out from the wall to make cable connections was not an option. Making the connections would have challenged a circus contortionist. It was excruciating agony of gigantic proportions. I can’t wait for the 2nd such TV to die.br /br /The heavy and sturdy stand on the LG swivels about 30 degrees making connections in back a breeze. For me, this was the best upgrade of all.br /br /Even without the benefit of the swivel stand, the viewing angle is outstanding and the best I’ve ever seen on any LCD TV. The viewing angle on this set is advertised at 170 degrees. I find that claim to be pretty accurate. br /br /My DVD movies are nearly as eye-popping as Blu-Ray. In fact, it is hard to see a significant difference using a progressive up-converting OPPO player. br /br /I connected a sound system and found it to be a bit overwhelming. Besides, it scared the beejeebers out of the cats. The TV sound suits me fine and offers several variations. If a tree falls through the roof or the cats start remodeling the house I’d like to be able to hear it.br /br /After two weeks of daily use, I can’t find anything to complain about with this TV. I would make the same purchase again. However, for a larger room, I would seriously consider the LG 55-inch screen with backlit LED.br /br /There is not much more clarity, if any, to be gained by waiting on new technology. If 3D is all they have to offer, I’m not interested. 3D was a fad 40 years ago. It has always been a fad and probably will be in the future. Besides, those silly-looking, cardboard glasses were a pain. When 3D TV hits the market, 3D glasses will have controls and cost up to a hundred dollars. And everybody in the family will have to have their own pair in their favorite color. Please spare me the agony. br /br /I am being bombarded with an offer of a 3-year LG Premium Care Plan for 9.99. Most all consumer advocates warn against buying these. I agree. If a product turns out to be a lemon and fails to preform satisfactorily, then I spread the news as fast and furious as possible. Ten of thousands of other consumers do likewise. Therefore, it falls the lot of the manufacturer to produce the best product possible that will last or else they won’t.br /br /On with the show.

Purchased the LG 47LH90 from my Local Best Buy for 99 on March 1st. Television graduated off my short list after Consumer Reports raved about its bigger brother (LG 55LH90). At the time, I was torn between the Sony and Samsung comparable units.br /br /Screen Reflectivity, Performance in bright rooms and Black contrasting were my three key drivers for picking this unit. I have one of the brightest living rooms imaginable with a wall of windows over 12′ high and two sky lights all positioned right next to this television set respectively. Glare is “minimal to nonexistent” and the Local Dimming feature allows for deep and rich blacks. Color set up right out of the box by using the 6 preset configurations (Standard, Natural, THX Cinema, Sport, Game or Vivid) make set up a breeze. For all you techno-geeks out there, there are two Expert Modes where you can set up and save a couple of custom views for your future use. br /br /Remote control has direct access to all these presets through a mini pop up app that give you access to audio, video, aspect and setup functions. I will give the “LG remote control” 5 stars.br /br /Standard Definition viewing is enhanced by my Dish TV features allowing me to Stretch and Zoom the picture across the 16:9 aspect ratio screen. HD viewing ROCKS on this television. Comparable to the best plasma screens on the market with colors that are rich, vivid and bright. br /br /These particular televisions viewing angles are best in class. (Viewing Angles range from 45 degrees for optimal picture quality to 75-80 degrees with minimal video artifacts being produced).br /br /Two minor complaints driving my overall 4 star rating:br /br /A) Factory Documentation – The documentation provided by LG on this set is pretty weak in regards to software options and television functionality. Internet research quickly answered some of my questions. Television installation, set up and pivot base construction instructions were sufficient. br /br /B) Closed caption support – Closed Captioning is NOT supported with HDMI, DVI or Composite inputs and must be driven by the set top box. Wish I knew this earlier but would NOT of changed my purchasing decision.br /br /Overall, I am quite pleased with this purchase and would HIGHLY recommend it for you. br /
