Sony Bravia W-Series KDL-40W4100 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

CHEAP Sony Bravia W-Series KDL-40W4100 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

I finally took the expensive plunge and bought me one of these babies about eight months ago, just in time to enjoy the NCAA basketball tournament in all of its widescreen, high-definition glory. I never thought I would pay so much money for a television in my life, but I have no regrets whatsoever. In fact, this is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.br /br /I did put a good bit of thought into my selection and purchase. Most of the technical concepts of high-definition TV were a mystery to me, so I tried my best to figure out which features I had to have, which ones I would like to have, and which ones I could afford. Frankly, I don’t remember all of that technical mumbo-jumbo anymore. Obviously, I wanted a TV capable of Full HD 1080p – anything less than that, and you’re just wasting your money, especially when and if you make the move to Blue-ray. The refresh rate was also important, as you need to have a refresh rate that is a multiple of 24 (since most movies and modern TV shows are shot at 24 frames per second) if you want everything you see to be smooth and natural on the screen; since this Sony model featured Motionflow 120Hz technology and true 24p True Cinema capability, I was satisfied that I was getting the best technology that I could afford. I should say that I decided on Sony pretty early on in the decision-making process, after reading up on Sony’s BRAVIA engine technology. Another selling point of this television is its virtual surround sound system, which more than meets my temporary needs until such time as I can put together a true home theater system. Sound was important to me because I’ve never liked the sound on the previous TV I purchased back in 2001 – in fact, I have to forego virtual surround sound options on that old one in order to have any chance of understanding what people are saying on the screen. I’m more than satisfied with the two-speaker virtual surround sound on this Sony BRAVIA, though. br /br /If you’re thinking about buying one of these mega-TVs, I would encourage you to go out to some electronics store and actually take a look at the different models. I knew I didn’t want anything smaller than a 40-inch screen, but I wasn’t sure the 40-inch was big enough to really satisfy me. At the same time, I didn’t want to go overboard with the size because video quality can become an issue with greater size and because I planned to use this TV in my computer room rather than my den (because that is where I spend almost all of my time). When I actually went out and compared sizes for myself, I was a little surprised at just how big the 40-inch really was, and it ended up being a perfect fit for me, both physically and aesthetically. You don’t want a TV too big for its space, as this is an investment you want to keep as safe and secure as possible. Bear this in mind, especially if you have children (or clumsy friends). br /br /Of course, you’ll need to purchase an HDMI cable separately in order to take full advantage of this TV’s high-definition capabilities, and don’t think you have to spend a fortune on it, either. As for hooking up your cable box, DVD player, VHS player, or whatever, you’ve got a virtual control panel of ready options on this set. For starters, there are four HDMI ports, meaning this TV will take whatever high definition component you want to throw at it. You also have component, S-video, standard audio and video ports as well as a PC input port. Your old VCR may not really utilize the capabilities of this television, but you don’t have to worry about not being able to still use it. br /br /If I had anything bad to say about this product, I would definitely say it. Unless you’re swimming in money, the purchase of an HD TV like this involves some sacrifice, and you surely don’t want to be stuck paying for something you aren’t happy with. The fact is, though, that I have nothing but positive things to say about this television. Now that football season has returned, I’m loving this Sony more than ever.

Samsung UN40B7000 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

CHEAP Samsung UN40B7000 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV

I’d been hearing about the upcoming Samsung 9000 series, with the wireless “media box” and the full localized LED backlighting (this one uses edge-based LED lighting). I kept waiting on it to come out, but it was delayed repeatedly, and I finally decided to go with this one (assuming that when the 9000 came out, I’d move this one to my bedroom).

Well, let’s just say I feel no desire to “upgrade” my living room TV now. This set is BEAUTIFUL… even though it’s not “localized LED backlit” I’ve still got so much black-to-white contrast, compared to any set I’ve ever seen before, that I can’t imagine, right now, that I’d be able to see the difference on a better set. If I can’t tell the difference between a device and the “better” version… as far as I’m concerned, there IS no difference.

This set is part of a complete “home theater” setup, including a full 7.1 speaker system (two original-release Bose 301 speakers, a set of Klipsch Quintet IIIs, and a Polk PSW505 12″ subwoofer), a Pioneer 1019 receiver, a home theater PC, plus a full range of sources (turntable, cassette, VCR, DVD-changer, Archos 5 internet media tablet, cable-company DVR, and blu-ray player).

If I had a much larger living room, I might want a LARGER set, but as far as the picture quality, I’m just amazed. Note that everything I watch on this set (in High-definition, at least) comes in through the receiver, and I’m sure that contributes some elements to the overall picture characteristics… but I’ve never seen a better picture anywhere.

The sound quality from the built-in speakers is better than “fine” but obviously not truly hi-fidelity. The feature set is very complete (though I think I need to upgrade my “wireless G” uplink point to a “wireless N” uplink point so that I can watch movies from online… you need a FAST connection for this to work, though all the rest of the internet-ish features work flawlessly on my “wireless G” connection).

Note that if you want the “internet” features, you’ll either need to connect a network cable to it, or do as I have and go wireless. If you go wireless, you have only one choice… Samsung’s PROPRIETARY “usb dongle.” That’s the one criticism of this set I can really make.

As far as the set’s cosmetics… I would have preferred it to be provided without the “touch of color” bezel, and instead just be the functional monitor (which would actually be a bit smaller overall). But I’m a guy, I couldn’t care less about the appearance (provide it doesn’t have “Hello Kitty” on it or something!). I care about how it works… and it works magnificently. I got it here because it was VERY affordable here… that’s what keeps me coming back to Amazon (instead of shopping at my local Best Buy or whatever). Mind you, I’d gladly patronize my local shop, if they had the stock, and the prices, you get here.

But let’s just say… I’ve decided to buy the smaller version (32″, 6000 series) to go into my bedroom now, and I bought that from Amazon as well. It’s hard to beat the service you get here!

Sony BRAVIA VE5-Series KDL-40VE5 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz Eco-friendly LCD HDTV

CHEAP Sony BRAVIA VE5-Series KDL-40VE5 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz Eco-friendly LCD HDTV

I’ve had this TV for over three months now. Previous to purchasing this set I waited and shopped for over a year looking for the right TV at the right price. I run my place off solar power, with every watt I use of power making a difference, so I had been looking forward to this model since it was announced early in 2009 due to it’s low power consumption. In this regard, it has not disappointed. For all LCD TV’s, power consumption varies highly depending on how high you turn up the backlight. I use it almost solely for movies, which look great with the backlight at the lowest setting or up only 1 or 2 clicks (”Cinema” setting is nice). At lowest backlighting this TV uses only about 80watts of power (measured with my handy Kill-A-Watt meter). Upping the backlight to 2 increases it to about 90watts. (For those interested, if I turn it all the way up it goes up to about 145watts. But I never want it anywhere near this bright.) The TV running together with my Sony Bluray player uses a total of 96 watts when playing a Bluray movie. This is fantastic. By comparison, my previous TV, a couple year old high quality _32″_ Sharp model (also 1080p, and one of the more energy efficient models of its time), used nearly as much power as this 40″ model. A new standard (non-”Eco”) Sony 40″ or a Samsung or other brand uses at least 125watts with the backlight turned down. With the backlight up other normal models use well over 200watts. So this model has a real world 40% power consumption savings compared to a typical 40″ set. This is fantastic, and every bit as good as I had hoped. br /br /Also if you’re considering a bigger 46 or 52″ set, the power consumption of this EV model in those bigger sizes actually scales better relative to normal LCD’s (not to mention plasmas) also. Meaning as you go up in size, you actually get a higher percentage increase in power consumption savings. So for example, the 46″ EV uses only about 20 watts more power than this 40″, compared to an increase of about 60 or more watts in a standard V-series or other brand LCD for the same increase in size. br /br /Power consumption: 5/5 stars.br /br /As to the picture quality, it is every bit as good as I expected for an LCD set. Even the blacks on this set are a huge improvement over my previous 2 year old Sharp 32″ LCD. They even seem slightly better (darker) than my brother’s one year old 52″ Sony V-series (52V4100). Of course the black levels aren’t going to be as perfect as my friend’s new 50″ plasma, due to the inherent flaws in LCD technology, but they are as good as any LCD I’ve seen, and I’m happy with that. I am sourcing almost solely Bluray, so the quality is top notch. I can not comment on how SD television looks as I’ve never used it, and don’t really understand why anyone would want to buy an expensive HDTV like this primarily for SD content. DVD’s through the Bluray player upscaling, look surprisingly good. Though nowhere near as stunning as Bluray, definitely better than standard DVD quality.br /In every other way the picture quality is fantastic, with one exception: There is a very slight “bleed in” of light on the upper left and right corners. I guess this might be that notorious problem I’ve heard about with Sony’s. As someone who is meticulous on details, I did notice it right away when I first turned on the set. However, it is only noticeable when the background is black, for example during movie end credits, and as I said, it is very slight. If it were more than very slight, I definitely would have returned or exchanged the set immediately, but it’s a tiny negative to an otherwise outstanding LCD picture quality.br /br /Picture quality: 4/5 stars.br /br /Sound quality, despite all the bad reviews I see here, is above average for built in sound on a flat panel. In fact, it’s far and away above most other HDTV’s I tested, particularly Samsung models, which seem to almost intentionally have unusable built in sound. It is also much better than my previous Sharp model, which incidentally still had much better sound than than the Samsung models I tested. I carefully tested the sound on some higher end Sony models as well (last year’s Z and XBR) and found the sound quality on this to be comparable. The real test however, is will the built in sound be acceptable, “good enough”, when actually watching a movie. It passes this test. It seems to depend a lot on the source or the actual specific disc, as sometimes having the sound at under half volume is fine, while another movie will require it to be nearly all the way up, but overall I find the built in speakers surprisingly usable.br /As to the vibration noise issue reported by many here, I do notice some vibration noise when the bass is loud and the volume is turned up high, on occasion, but not so much as to be a glaring problem. Maybe others here got defective speakers. In conclusion, the sound is as good as any flat panel set I’ve used yet (better than 50″ Panasonic Plasma, better than most other LCD’s, about equal to high end LCD’s). Especially if you’re using the TV mainly for sports and TV, the built in sound is good. That said, as would be the case with any HDTV today, I will probably be adding a good quality sound bar or surround system in the future, to get more of a theater-like movie experience. br /br /Sound quality: 4/5 stars.br /br /Overall I’m very satisfied with this set. I felt compelled to put in my two cents after reading the several negative reviews here. Many of the negatives seem to either be due to bad speakers, or some unrealistic expectation with regard to SD (Standard Definition) picture quality, etc. I’m glad I bought it before reading all the bad speakers reviews, as those reviews might have stopped me from buying it. Few people seem interested in this TV’s main draw which makes it worth the slight premium over Sony’s regular V-series set: Low power consumption. In this regard it is so far and away above the rest that I’m tempted to give the set 5 stars overall. The only reason I’m not is because of the very slight light bleed in at the top corners, for which I refuse to give Sony the “perfect” 5 stars.br /br /Lastly, when you consider that the price of this has come down so much now as we head into 2010 with new models on the horizon, I think right now is the sweet spot in terms of the value you get with this set, if you’re looking for a good quality TV with low power consumption. br /br /Overall: 4/5 stars.br /br /

Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

CHEAP Samsung LN40A650 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color

First, for those that had problems at the one year mark — thank you for reminding me! I had planned on buying the extended warranty prior to my expiration (not sure if it is still in effect, but I did get 3 extra months over the standard one year warranty by registering on-line). Anyway, so far I am extremely satisfied with my purchase! I had done much research prior to buying my first LCD and it was the massive amount of 5-stars on Amazon and all of the comments from the satisfied buyers that clinched the deal — although I did go to a store to view the quality first-hand. Even though I waited for a sale to patronize one of my local stores, since I was hesitant to purchase an item this large on-line for fear of damage in transit, Amazon’s price and service just could not be beat. All my fear’s went out the window with Amazon’s white-glove delivery service — it was first class (although I did not need them to do anything more than remove the outer box to confirm that the TV was not physically damaged) — the delivery people were friendly and courteous, and it had not been in a huge truck filled with lots of boxes — just a small van, for “just my tv” (almost :-)

The image quality is second to none — with the sound being quite good, but I am only using the Surround-Sound speakers that are in the unit and am more than happy with them — excellent clarity and fine for those that do not need to blast out the room (I’m sure with external speakers it would sound incredible!). It is truly a pleasure to watch Blu-Ray discs with this TV. The colors and clarity are tack on — compared to others that I saw while in the store. Only one thing — for those who had not viewed a movie on HD or Blu-Ray before: some of those actors and actresses are not as perfect as you may have originally thought. :-)

Another clincher for this tv over some others (same with the Blu-Ray player) was ease of applying upgrades. My tv/player is not hooked up to any cable, internet, etc but I can easily download the firmware onto a dedicated pen-drive and quickly apply them to the units. Just be careful to follow the easy instructions and the process is effortless.

There is only one ‘problem’ that I can think of in the year that I have had the unit — I had set the Mhz rate to 120 when I first set up the tv, thinking since I purchased it because of the faster-than-others rating, I should use it. I was shocked to watch my first Blu-Ray and watch what appeared to be a cheap soap opera — come to find out that IS what happens at 120 Hz. Well, it was terrible and at first I was disappointed — it was cool to see so much detail, but it did not feel like a movie anymore. I did a little research and found out that only for gaming and such do you need the 120 Hz setting; set at 60, the picture is still crystal clear but you feel like you are watching a movie! “Problem” solved! That’s it–overall no problems, no issues, just a great tv! Hope you enjoy yours as well!

Super Clear Panel

clear panel chart Samsung enhances the clarity of select LCD HDTVs by replacing the light-diffusing plastic face of traditional LCD HDTVs with a  natural black panel with a clear anti-glare shield. Reduced reflection of external light creates a new dimension in image clarity, highlighting black and darkened areas, enabling vibrant, more compelling colors and a brighter, clearer picture.  Black will never again appear grayish. Black details will show in vivid black even in dark scenes.

The latest version of Samsung’s breakthrough super clear panel technology makes colors appear more vibrant and blacks even deeper than ever. Enhanced films reduce glare and optimize off-angle viewing.

Wide Color Enhancer/Cold Cathode Flourescent Lamp

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp backlights to give you 92% coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. The system displays wider color reproduction, showing you truer colors – the fresh green of spring foliage, the intense blue of the summer sky.

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)

DLNA logo

dlna daisy chain
You already know something about digital living. There’s the TV and digital video recorder in your family room. (And another set in your bedroom.) You have a PC and digital printer in your office, along with a network attached storage device. And you’ve copied all your music onto your portable music player and haven’t had to open a CD case for years. But getting them to talk to each other can be pretty tough. Why is it still so difficult to send digital content from one device to another?

Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) is a collaboration of the world’s leading consumer electronics, PC and mobile companies that has created design guidelines for a new generation of products that can work together — no matter the brand.

Think for a moment about all of the photos “locked away” on your home PC that you wish you could access while entertaining your friends and family. Now, thanks to DLNA enabled devices, a DLNA-enabled PC can be accessed from the comfort of your living room or family room via a DLNA-enabled HDTV, where you can enjoy your memories with friends and family, without having to deal with the hassle and non-intuitive “PCexperience”.

Or, say you recently downloaded your daughter’s birthday party video from your digital camcorder to your PC. Now you want to share it with your parents who are visiting. Without DLNA, you probably have to burn a DVD of the video or hook up the camcorder to the TV. With DLNA, you can just use your TV’s remote to call up the video on your TV. That’s it.

Super Patterned Vertical Alignment

Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

CHEAP Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-40S5100 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Black

I am comparing the sony to a JVC that was about the same price. I am by no means an expert when it comes to flat panel TV’s.

I did not buy from this site. One of the national clubs has a better return policy. I purchased this TV and a 42 inch JVC. I am returning the JVC. The Sony controls and remote (although not multifunction)are superior in most aspects. I purchased both the JVC and Sony at the same time.

Most of what I have to say are based on using QAM on Comcast (no cable box). With the switch to all digital I found that Comcast in my area (northern suburb of Chicago) has put the digital starter stations on QAM. This means if you have a QAM digital tuner on the TV you can get these stations. Almost all large screen TV’s have QAM.

The Sony found the stations (about 100 of them) and put them in a fairly logical order. I had to go through each QAM station and label them through “managing stations”. I will have to make a cheat sheet showing which station is which. I have not seen any reviews that address the time it takes to change stations. The Sony changes stations much faster than the JVC.

It appears to be viewable in a brightly lit room. At night it is very bright. I have not modified any of the settings – yet.

I have not yet noticed the problems with the dimmer function that a lot of people have complained about, perhaps I have the update.

It does not in my opinion manage the switching between wide screen and 4:3 very well. It seems like I am always changing the settings depending on what I am watching. The JVC did a better job.

The JVC had an Ipod dock. My teenage sons really like this they were disappointed when I told them I was returning it.

If I was only using the tv through a cable box I don’t know that wouldn’t be more favorable toward the JVC. It is a larger screen for the same amount of money.
